Dr. James Brewer By Peggy Brown, Executive Director, MMHF Dr. Jim (James) Brewer, Hazlehurst, MS, is founder and Chairman Emeritus of the Board of the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame which was organized as a non-profit in December of 1997. Brewer has:
Jim is the author of the trademarked slogan “Mississippi, Birthplace of America’s Music” which the State of Mississippi has used on the state’s license plates and the welcome signs coming into the state. Brewer’s passion and love for Mississippi and its’ gift to the world of America’s music and his love of the people who have made the music has motivated him to promote the positive things about our state, not just to its citizens but to the world. The Clarion Ledger newspaper quoted Jim as saying, “There are two Mississippi’s. One is our unfortunate past. The other is the most positive thing. There is one thing that worldwide is positive about Mississippi, and that’s its music.” |

Mississippi has a large number of music super stars and a few lesser stars, but Dr. Jim Brewer took it upon himself to collect the names and stories of as MANY of the people in Mississippi who have impacted music as he could find. The fruit of his labor is the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame and the Mississippi Music Museum whose missions are the documentation and celebration of Mississippi’s place in the spectrum of American music.
He is the author of the slogan, “Mississippi, Birthplace of America’s Music.” It is not a just an idle statement because the pioneers of music are from Mississippi, Tommy and Robert Johnson, not related except by blues, Jimmie Rodgers, father of Country Music and Elvis Presley, King of Rock and Roll are all from Mississippi. “The real question is why, in one of the poorest states in the union, do you find such a rich musical history and heritage?
It is because music in Mississippi is more than entertainment; it tells the story of a state’s, and ultimately a nation’s people,” explained Jim.
Add to the music greats all of the supporting cast who Dr. Brewer has discovered and written about and the evidence to support the slogan goes way beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Jim has produced a book, CDs, teacher guides, a Blues curriculum for schools, website resources and music industry seminars. The MMHF and Jim produced a 45minute documentary/film about Mississippi’s music heritage beginning in the cotton fields. This film was made available to all of the school districts in Mississippi.
The MMHF now directed by Peggy Brown continues to educate adults and students through symposiums and Blues in the School workshops.
Jim Brewer founded the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame over 20 years ago and was the Chairman of the Board until 2015 but has continued his music research. He can be found talking about the Blues and America’s music on a daily basis at the Mississippi Music Museum (sponsored by the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame) in the Old Train Depot in Hazlehurst, Mississippi where the Robert Johnson Mississippi Blues Trail Marker is also located.
